I've made it to Ireland safe and sound! The six hour time difference is what is the only difficult thing about being in Ireland, thus far. My friend Emily and I flew into Ireland on January 10, and stayed at a Hotel in Shannon, Ireland. It was actually a really nice hotel and we slept the majority of the day. January 12, the remainder of the group arrived in Shannon and we all took a bus to Spiddal. We got to our cottages around 12noon and had until three to relax/unpack/sleep and the like. At three, Jane Marie and her kitchen staff cooked us dinner. It was chicken, mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cooked red cabbage, cooked carrots and broccoli. It was really good! For dessert we had a brownie and ice cream. It was delicious!!! After dinner, a group of us walked down to the ocean. The sun sets here around 4:30pm, and there’s not much sun to begin with. It’s cloudy and rainy...but light outside. When we got down to the ocean it was dark out already, so I tried my best to get some pictures but they weren’t the greatest. After that, my cottage mates, Emily and Ann walked the two-mile trek into Spiddal where we walked around for around 20 minutes. Jane Marie told us that every Sunday there is Irish music, singing, dancing, etc. at a pub in Spiddal from 5-8pm. We weren’t sure what is expected to wear to a pub, so we didn’t go in this Sunday. Perhaps next Sunday! Tomorrow we start class with Jane Marie, and we will take a tour of Spiddal from a man named Brandon. Class starts around 10am and will normally go until 1pm. Which is awesome because we will have the entire afternoon to do whatever we want. The walk into Spiddal is going to be one I will get used to. It’s so interesting being so close to the ocean, and I'm not complaining! Apparently, two weeks ago there was a hurricane here that really messed up some of the infrastructures of buildings and some sidewalks. Also, it’s FREEZING in the houses because they are made out of cement blocks. We have hot water bottles, which act like corn bags. Wish I would have brought my corn bag. I’m very excited to be here, but I just want to see EVERYTHING!
Until later, loves.
